A tragic incident at Suncor’s Fort Hills site near Fort McMurray, Alberta has resulted in the loss of a worker’s life. Alberta’s Jobs, Economy, Trade, and Immigration department confirmed the fatality, stating that the worker was operating heavy equipment on January 13 when it became submerged in the muskeg.
Upon receiving the distress call, both the RCMP and Suncor’s emergency response teams rushed to the scene. Suncor disclosed that the worker was operating the equipment near a body of water, although the individual’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Suncor mentioned that search and recovery operations are currently in progress. The company indicated that the incident is under investigation, with early signs suggesting a potential medical cause. The deceased worker was identified as a contractor.
Regrettably, this is not the first fatal incident at Suncor’s Fort Hills site. In 2019, Jonathan Murphy tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle, and the following year, two workers perished in a collision between a bulldozer and a pickup truck at the same location.
As the investigation is ongoing by Occupational Health and Safety, the Jobs, Economy, Trade, and Immigration department stated that no additional details will be shared at this time. Suncor expressed condolences, extending thoughts to the victim’s family, friends, and colleagues during this challenging period.
Fort Hills, located approximately 525 kilometers north of Edmonton, is an open-pit truck and shovel mine.
