Singer Bonnie Tyler has awakened from a coma, although she remains in critical condition in intensive care, according to an update on her official website. The 75-year-old Grammy-nominated pop icon, known for her distinctive voice, was admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she resides, for urgent surgery on her intestines last month. Subsequently, she was placed in a medically induced coma.
The latest statement released on Monday revealed that Tyler is no longer in a coma; however, her recovery is gradual. While her doctors are optimistic about her eventual full recovery, they emphasize that it will be a slow process. Despite the setback, there is hope that her postponed or canceled shows scheduled until August could potentially proceed in the autumn.
Tyler, renowned for her 1980s hit power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” a perennial favorite at karaoke events, has garnered a new wave of fans each time there is a solar or lunar eclipse. Originating from Wales as the daughter of a coal miner, she achieved an earlier success in 1978 with “It’s a Heartache” before solidifying her place in music history with “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” crafted by the legendary producer and songwriter Jim Steinman, known for his work with Meat Loaf.
