“BC and Yukon Residents Isolated After Hantavirus Outbreak”

British Columbia’s top health official has confirmed that the quartet of Canadians undergoing isolation in Victoria following the hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship hails from B.C. and the Yukon. The group consists of a senior resident from Vancouver Island, another individual in their 50s originally from B.C. but currently residing abroad, and a Yukon couple in their 70s, as per Dr. Bonnie Henry. Touching down in Victoria on Sunday evening, the group remains asymptomatic and in good health, a fact that Henry emphasized in her update on Monday morning. She further mentioned that the individuals are undergoing daily monitoring, including symptom assessments, and have been provided with clear instructions in case their health status changes. The four Canadians are set to self-isolate for a minimum of 21 days from May 6 at a specified location, with the possibility of extending the isolation period to 42 days if required due to the virus’s incubation timeline. The hantavirus outbreak unfolded over several weeks on the MV Hondius cruise ship, which journeyed from Argentina to Antarctica and then across the Atlantic Ocean. The disease, typically transmitted through inhaling rodent droppings, resulted in three deaths and infected five passengers who disembarked the ship. Although hantavirus is not easily transmissible among people, the Andes virus strain identified in this outbreak could exhibit rare person-to-person spread. Symptoms usually manifest within one to eight weeks post-exposure.
