Air Canada Suspends U.S. Routes Early Amid Fuel Price Surge

Air Canada has made the decision to suspend service on four seasonal routes to U.S. destinations earlier than initially planned due to the significant rise in jet fuel prices. The affected routes and their last flight dates are as follows:

– Toronto to Sacramento: Last flight on August 1
– Vancouver to Raleigh: Last flight on July 29
– Toronto to Charleston: Last flight on September 6
– Montreal to Austin: Last flight on September 7

Air Canada intends to fully resume service on these routes by the summer of 2027. Passengers impacted by these changes will be provided with alternative travel options or refunds as appropriate.

As a result of escalating jet fuel prices caused by the conflict in Iran and the subsequent oil blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, airlines globally have started to reduce flight operations. Air Canada previously announced the suspension of six routes, citing economic feasibility concerns. WestJet has also disclosed plans to decrease flight capacity by consolidating routes and shortening the travel period for certain seasonal services in response to the jet fuel shortage.

Notably, major Canadian airlines including Air Canada, WestJet, Porter Airlines, and Air Transat have announced fare increases or surcharges to mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs on their operations.
