Professional rock climber Alex Honnold’s planned ropeless ascent of the Taipei 101 skyscraper has been postponed by 24 hours due to inclement weather conditions, according to the event organizers. The daring free solo climb of the iconic structure in Taiwan’s bustling capital was originally set to be streamed live on Netflix on Saturday local time, or Friday evening for U.S. audiences.
With rain persisting in Taipei shortly before the scheduled start time, the organizers opted to delay Honnold’s climb until the following morning in Taiwan, where clearer skies are anticipated based on the weather forecast. Emphasizing safety as their foremost concern, Netflix issued a statement confirming the decision.
Despite a crowd of approximately 100 spectators eagerly awaiting the climb, including fans like Taiwanese supporter Queenie Chang, who expressed understanding for the postponement, acknowledging the importance of prioritizing Honnold’s well-being.
Organizers had already acknowledged the possibility of light rain on the morning of the ascent and had contingency plans in place to postpone the event if weather conditions posed a risk to Honnold’s safety.
The rescheduled climb is now set to be broadcast live on Saturday evening in the U.S. at 5 p.m. PT or 8 p.m. ET.
