“Neighbourly Homes Project Welcomes First Residents in Fredericton”

A new transitional housing project nearing completion on Forest Hill Road in Fredericton has already welcomed its first residents. The initiative, known as Neighbourly Homes and led by the non-profit organization 12 Neighbours, will feature two courtyards with a total of 27 single-person units.

According to Marcel LeBrun, the founder of 12 Neighbours and the driving force behind the Neighbourly Homes project, 13 individuals have moved into the first courtyard while the second courtyard, consisting of 14 units, is still under construction. Each resident will have their own small modular unit equipped with essential amenities.

Unlike the 12 Neighbours community, the Forest Hill Road project offers communal services including bathrooms, showers, a shared kitchen, and a laundry room. LeBrun emphasized the importance of residents feeling a sense of ownership over their living spaces.

In addition to housing, residents will receive meals, support programs, and access to counseling services. The project also provides easy access to public transportation and encourages participation in various services available on-site.

LeBrun highlighted that there are no strict conditions for residents to adhere to in terms of sobriety or program participation. The focus is on stabilizing individuals before offering support services. Residents are expected to follow a “good neighbor policy” to maintain a respectful environment.

Early reports from Mike Sewell, the site manager, indicate a smooth transition for residents settling into their new homes. The selection process for residents involved collaboration with social development agencies to identify individuals who could benefit most from the housing opportunity.

Despite initial community concerns and legal challenges, the project has been well-received since residents moved in. LeBrun is optimistic about the project’s success based on previous implementations in Saint John. He hopes that the community will embrace the initiative and potentially offer assistance in the future.
