Zelenskyy Urges Europe to Act on Russian Tankers

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has criticized Europe’s handling of the Greenland dispute with the U.S., emphasizing the need for more courage on the continent. Zelenskyy described Europe as a “fragmented kaleidoscope” of small and middle powers, questioning its leadership role in defending global freedom. Speaking passionately at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Zelenskyy urged Europe to take action against Russian tankers transporting oil that is financing the war in Ukraine, drawing a comparison to recent U.S. actions seizing oil-carrying ships from Venezuela.

Highlighting Europe’s tendency to prioritize discussions over immediate action, Zelenskyy called for decisive steps today that will shape the future. He questioned why Europe has not taken similar measures as President Trump in intercepting tankers from the shadow fleet and seizing oil. As Zelenskyy concluded his speech, reports surfaced of France’s navy intercepting a Russian oil tanker in the Mediterranean Sea, with intelligence support from the United Kingdom, targeting the sanctioned Russian shadow fleet.

Applauding the interception, Zelenskyy praised the resolve shown, emphasizing the importance of such actions. In a subsequent question-and-answer session, Zelenskyy disclosed plans for trilateral meetings involving Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. in Abu Dhabi, stressing the necessity for compromises from all parties, including Russia. He expressed optimism following a productive meeting with President Trump on peace talks and air defense supplies, aiming to bolster cooperation for enhanced security.

Echoing Zelenskyy’s sentiments, U.S. President Trump commended the positive discussions with Zelenskyy and conveyed a shared desire to end the conflict in Ukraine. Diplomatic efforts intensified, with U.S. envoys engaging in talks with Russian President Putin as part of ongoing peace negotiations. Despite challenges and differing stances, all parties continue to strive for a sustainable resolution to the long-standing conflict.
