ICE Detainment of Five-Year-Old Sparks Outcry

A young boy returning home from preschool with his father in Minnesota faced a distressing encounter as captured in school officials’ reports. The account details how U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents apprehended a five-year-old child, donned in a blue tuque and carrying a Spider-Man backpack, in the driveway of their Columbia Heights residence on a recent Tuesday.

The child, identified as Liam Conejo Ramos, was allegedly utilized “as bait” by federal officers in their pursuit of his father, according to Zena Stenvik, the superintendent of Columbia Heights Public Schools. Stenvik stated that despite another adult’s pleas to care for the child, the agents declined and proceeded to escort the child to the door, instructing him to knock and request entry to ascertain the presence of other individuals at home, effectively employing a five-year-old as a lure.

Presently, both Liam and his father are reportedly detained at the Dilley Immigration Processing Centre in Dilley, Texas, as confirmed by the family’s attorney, Marc Prokosch. Prokosch condemned the detention of children and families seeking asylum as “inhumane and unacceptable.”

The incident occurred in Columbia Heights, a suburb of Minneapolis, amidst heightened immigration enforcement activities in the region following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good by ICE agents. The Department of Homeland Security asserted that ICE’s operation targeted Liam’s father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, described as an “illegal alien from Ecuador.”

Contrary to allegations, ICE denied intentionally targeting the child and clarified that the child was safeguarded as his father fled during the arrest. ICE officers purportedly inquire whether parents wish to be removed with their children or designate a safe guardian for their children’s care.

During a visit to Minnesota, U.S. Vice-President JD Vance reiterated ICE’s actions, emphasizing that the child was taken into custody due to his father’s abandonment. Vance underscored the necessity of ensuring the child’s safety in such circumstances.

Further details regarding Liam’s post-arrest situation remain undisclosed, prompting queries about his whereabouts. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz condemned the reported detainment of the child, advocating for a cessation of punitive measures by the Trump administration.

School officials in Columbia Heights disclosed that Liam was the fourth student within their district apprehended by ICE agents recently. The incidents involved students being taken into custody while on their way to school, sparking concerns within the community.

Efforts to obtain additional information about the detained children from Homeland Security are ongoing, with responses pending.
