A 64-year-old man from Prince County passed away after being struck by a single vehicle while walking on Thursday morning. The East Prince RCMP and Island EMS promptly responded to the incident on Route 1A in North Bedeque at 6:30 a.m., according to a news release from the RCMP.
The pedestrian was taken to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries later on. Cpl. Gavin Moore, the media relations officer for the P.E.I. RCMP, informed CBC News that a small pickup truck was involved in the collision, and the driver stayed at the scene. He mentioned that there is no suspicion of alcohol or drug involvement, and the investigation is currently ongoing.
The RCMP closed Route 1A for about two hours as a traffic reconstructionist worked at the site, but the road has since been reopened. Moore highlighted that pedestrian fatalities are uncommon on P.E.I. and emphasized the importance of vigilance for both drivers and pedestrians/cyclists, suggesting the use of reflective clothing for safety.
Moore expressed sadness over the tragic incident and its impact on the community, emphasizing the need for caution and awareness on the roads by all individuals.
