“Boy Killed by Large Dogs in Nova Scotia Tragedy”

Nova Scotia RCMP have identified a Rottweiler and two Cane Corsos as the three large-breed dogs responsible for a tragic incident that claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy in the vicinity of Shelburne, N.S. The victim, Drew Nickerson, succumbed to his injuries at a Halifax hospital on Monday, having been airlifted following the attack that occurred while he was cycling near his residence on Upper Sandy Cove Road in Welshtown.

In a statement to CBC News, Staff Sgt. Mark MacPherson disclosed that the dogs had rushed onto the road as Nickerson was riding his bike. Video footage of the incident has been obtained from a nearby property, as authorities strive to comprehend the circumstances surrounding the attack. MacPherson emphasized that the dogs were off their owner’s premises during the incident, with one of the owners driving the injured boy to the hospital due to the severity of his wounds.

MacPherson mentioned that there were no prior complaints lodged against the dogs with law enforcement or local animal control. The investigation is ongoing, with efforts concentrated on analyzing video evidence, conducting community interviews, and tracking the dogs’ movements. The dog owners have cooperated with the authorities, and the animals were euthanized by a veterinarian.

The tragic event has deeply affected the community in Shelburne County, where Drew Nickerson, a Grade 8 student at Shelburne Regional High School, resided. The community has rallied around the Nickerson family, with Fisherman Conway Hutt spearheading a fundraising initiative that garnered significant support, including donations of prizes such as lobster, scallops, gift cards, and blankets.

An online fundraising campaign has raised nearly $50,000 for Drew’s mother, with the outpouring of support showcasing the widespread impact of the tragedy. Described as a friendly individual with a love for horses, all-terrain vehicles, and outdoor activities, Drew’s untimely passing has left a profound void in the hearts of many.

The family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming community support and announced that the boy’s grandparents would cover the funeral expenses. Tributes poured in from various quarters, with Drew being remembered for his soccer achievements, infectious smile, kindness, humor, and the positivity he exuded in every interaction.
