A five-month-old infant remains in critical condition after a multi-vehicle crash in Laval, Quebec, which resulted in the tragic death of a six-year-old girl and injuries to several others. The incident took place on Route 335 between Dagenais Boulevard and Saint-Saëns Street on Monday evening. Initially, Urgences-santé reported nine individuals injured, including three adults, the infant, and the young girl who later passed away.
Four additional individuals sustained injuries, but their conditions were not life-threatening as confirmed by emergency services. A 40-year-old man was briefly detained by Laval police on Tuesday but was subsequently released. Police later transferred the case to the Crown prosecutor’s office in Quebec, which requested more information. Consequently, the man was released with potential charges pending.
Laval city councillor David De Cotis expressed his condolences and raised concerns about the safety of Route 335 in a social media post on Tuesday. He advocated for immediate safety measures such as concrete barriers, temporary traffic-control devices, and an assessment by transport authorities to prevent future accidents. De Cotis emphasized the importance of prioritizing residents’ safety, especially children.
In response, a spokesperson from Quebec’s Transport Ministry stated that any accident is unacceptable. Ministry officials were dispatched to the scene for information collection, and a thorough analysis will be conducted within two months following standard protocols. While the analysis results will not be disclosed due to ongoing investigations, the ministry assured that necessary actions will be taken to enhance road safety.
The ministry clarified that the City of Laval had not previously requested safety enhancements for that road section. The current lane setup is temporary as part of the Highway 19 extension project, with plans for a permanent divided roadway featuring a central median upon project completion.
