The City of St. Catharines marked the start of its 150th anniversary festivities with a flag-raising ceremony on Monday, introducing a series of upcoming events. The city unveiled a special logo for its sesquicentennial, symbolizing the diverse communities that have shaped its history long before gaining official city status in 1876.
In a statement, the city highlighted the theme of “Our Common Ground,” emphasizing the enduring significance of the land beneath their feet. This land has played host to indigenous peoples, served as a refuge for freedom seekers during the Underground Railroad era, and fostered the growth of vital resources like waterways, vineyards, orchards, and gardens.
The anniversary logo, resembling land parcels arranged like quilt patches, features various shades of blue squares representing the city’s multitude of communities, neighborhoods, and industries united to commemorate its 150 years. Mayor Mat Siscoe noted the historical significance of the patchwork layout, reflecting the diverse communities that have thrived in St. Catharines over time.
Looking ahead, St. Catharines plans to honor its history through a weekly social media series showcasing pivotal moments throughout the year. Scheduled events include a community gathering at Montebello Park on May 2 to celebrate the city’s official city status day. Additionally, the city will appoint a Poet Laureate to develop a legacy project promoting city pride and history through poetry, cultural events, and more. Collaborating with local environmental organizations, St. Catharines will launch a tree planting initiative as part of its legacy project.
Further initiatives include 150 community engagement activities, events, and celebrations to involve residents in the city’s milestone celebration. The city’s 150th anniversary festivities will culminate on July 1, coinciding with Canada Day, featuring St. Catharines’ inaugural drone show and fireworks display at Rennie Park in Port Dalhousie.
