Evan Bouchard remained unfazed even as he etched his name in elite hockey history. The Edmonton Oilers defenseman showcased a remarkable performance by scoring his first-ever hat trick and adding three assists during Saturday’s game against the Washington Capitals, securing a 6-5 victory for his team.
In his 400th regular-season game, Bouchard achieved a rare feat, becoming only the fourth defenseman in NHL history to record three goals and three assists in a single game. This exclusive list includes hockey legends such as Bobby Orr, Tom Bladon, and Doug Crossman.
Reflecting on his exceptional achievement, Bouchard humbly stated, “It’s good company for sure. It’s an honor to be on that list, but the most important thing is that we secured the win on a significant night.”
The 26-year-old defenseman had a standout performance, boosting his season stats to 14 goals and 41 assists. Oilers’ captain Connor McDavid lauded Bouchard’s stellar display, emphasizing, “It was an outstanding performance from a defenseman. Truly special. That’s his standard. His peak performance ranks among the best globally, not just among defensemen but all players.”
Bouchard’s memorable night commenced with his first goal near the end of the first period, as he fired a powerful shot from just inside the blue line past Capitals’ goalie Charlie Lindgren. He extended Edmonton’s lead in the second period with another impressive goal, causing Lindgren’s glove to inadvertently push the puck into the net.
The hat-trick moment arrived early in the third period, triggering a shower of hats onto the ice as Bouchard skillfully netted a shot from the high slot after receiving a pass from McDavid. Despite his remarkable achievements, Bouchard opted for a modest celebration, raising his stick as teammates congratulated him on the ice.
Selected as the 10th overall pick by the Oilers in 2018, Bouchard is known for his composed demeanor in all circumstances. He remarked, “I’ve always tried to maintain a steady mindset. The game has its ups and downs, but staying balanced usually yields the best results.”
Bouchard’s exceptional performance is viewed as a valuable lesson for aspiring defensemen, as emphasized by his defensive partner Mattias Ekholm, who expressed his intention to showcase the game to his children as a source of inspiration. Oilers’ head coach Kris Knoblauch commended Bouchard for his all-around strong performance, highlighting his defensive contributions and offensive prowess that showcased him as one of the premier defensemen in the league.
While Bouchard’s stellar performance took the spotlight, Connor McDavid delivered another outstanding performance, scoring twice, including the game-winning goal just 46 seconds into overtime, and contributing three assists. With 32 goals and 90 points this season, McDavid reclaimed the top spot in the NHL points race, holding a three-point lead over Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche.
