“Murphy’s Two Goals Lift Montreal Victoire to Victory”

Maureen Murphy netted two goals to lead Montreal Victoire to a 3-1 victory over Ottawa Charge in a packed Place Bell arena in Laval, Quebec, on Saturday. Ann-RenĂ©e Desbiens stood strong with 23 saves for the Victoire, propelling them to second place in the Professional Women’s Hockey League standings. Abby Roque sealed the win with an empty-net goal.

Faduza Kadirova found the net for Ottawa Charge, with Gwyneth Philips making 33 saves. Montreal took the lead in the first period when Hayley Scamurra set up Murphy for a goal off a rebound. Later in the period, Murphy scored again on a power play with a one-timer from the left face-off circle.

Despite Ottawa’s efforts, a goal in the second period was disallowed due to contact with Desbiens. Ottawa finally got on the scoreboard with a goal by Kadirova. Ottawa pulled their goalie in the final minutes but couldn’t find the equalizer.

Desbiens put on a stellar performance, making key saves throughout the game, including denying Emily Clark on a breakaway. She also shut down Ottawa’s power play, which had been the league’s best coming into the game.

The Charge’s only two recent losses in regulation have been against Montreal. Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday, with Montreal facing Toronto Sceptres and Ottawa taking on Seattle Torrent.
