Marine Atlantic has struck a five-year deal with Stena RoRo to lease a large ferry, enhancing capacity on the Cabot Strait between Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. The A Nepita, a vessel similar in size, capacity, and amenities to existing ferries like the Highlanders, Blue Puttees, and Ala’suinu, will cater to the high demand for both passenger and commercial traffic, particularly during the bustling summer tourism season, according to Marine Atlantic spokesperson Darrell Mercer.
Mercer emphasized the scarcity of suitable vessels for their immediate capacity needs, stressing the urgency of the situation. Originally named Superfast X and previously operated by Corsica Linea on the Marseille to Corsica route in Europe, the A Nepita will soon undergo modifications, including a fresh Marine Atlantic color scheme, crew training, and regulatory approvals to comply with Canadian waters’ operational standards.
Despite efforts, the vessel may not be operational in time for the upcoming peak season, as it requires several months for the necessary adjustments. Following a capacity strain in 2025, the federal government allocated funds for the charter, underscoring the importance of bolstering capacity. While Mercer did not disclose specific financial details, he reassured that passenger and commercial rates would remain unaffected, despite the previous year’s significant rate cuts by the federal government.
Acknowledging the vessel’s ability to serve key routes, including Port aux Basques to North Sydney and seasonal service to Argentia, Mercer hinted at a potential shift in the Marine Atlantic fleet’s dynamics with the arrival of the A Nepita. He mentioned that decisions regarding the future of the Leif Ericson, the oldest commercial vessel in the fleet acquired in 2001, are forthcoming.
