The cold weather in Saskatoon with wind chills in the -40s is not deterring the University of Saskatchewan Huskie athletes from their practice sessions at the Merlis Besher Centre this week. Despite the freezing temperatures, the Huskie women’s basketball team is on an impressive winning streak of 44 consecutive victories that has spanned over a year and two seasons. Their last defeat was against the Calgary Dinos in November 2024.
This Friday, the undefeated Huskies, with a perfect 14-0 record in the regular season, will face off against the Calgary Dinos, the team that handed them their last loss. Forward Téa DeMong expressed excitement about the upcoming challenge, eager to seek revenge against their opponents.
The team boasts experienced leadership with five fifth-year players and three fourth-year members. Head coach Lisa Thomaidis, entering her 27th year with the team, highlighted the importance of the veteran players in guiding the team to success, having experienced both triumphs and setbacks.
Coach Thomaidis, renowned as one of the top head coaches in U Sports basketball, has led the Huskies to three national championships and has also coached national teams in Canada and Germany.
Captain Gage Grassick praised the coaching staff for their role in the team’s consistent success, emphasizing their focus on developing not only skilled basketball players but also well-rounded individuals. Grassick, the U Sports player of the year in 2025, described the team as “gritty,” emphasizing their relentless work ethic and determination.
As they prepare for back-to-back games against the formidable Dinos, the Huskies remain focused on their goal, recognizing the competitive landscape in the Canada West conference. Guard Logan Reider emphasized the team’s unity and work ethic, highlighting their commitment to maintaining their top position in the league.
With the Huskies currently holding the number 1 ranking in the conference, Coach Thomaidis sees the strong competition as a valuable opportunity to elevate the team’s performance leading up to the playoffs.
Looking ahead, Thomaidis believes there is still untapped potential within the team, aiming to showcase their talent as they progress through the season. The upcoming game against the Dinos is set for 6 p.m. CT on Friday at the Physical Activity Complex, with the men’s game to follow. Saturday’s action begins at 5 p.m. CT.
