“Freezing Rain Warning: Hazardous Conditions in Southern Ontario”

Freezing rain is forecasted to cause hazardous road conditions and potential power disruptions in southern Ontario as per a warning issued by Environment Canada on Tuesday. The freezing rain is anticipated to commence in the morning or early afternoon, initially as freezing drizzle, with a transition to rain later in the day as temperatures increase. Ice accumulation of one to five millimeters is likely between Hamilton and London, extending northwards toward Owen Sound. Navigating through the area, whether by driving or walking, is expected to be challenging, as stated by Environment Canada meteorologist Alyssa Young. Young emphasized the importance of maintaining ample space while driving and allowing extra travel time to adjust to slower speeds than usual.

Both Environment Canada and the Ontario Provincial Police are advising drivers to exercise additional caution as the roads become icy. Police authorities are urging drivers to drive cautiously, reduce speed, and maintain a safe distance between vehicles. Ontario Provincial Police spokesperson Ed Sanchuk emphasized the need for drivers to adjust their speed according to prevailing road and weather conditions to ensure a safe arrival at their destinations and, more importantly, a safe return home to their families. While Tuesday’s freezing rain is not expected to reach the severity of the Boxing Day ice storm, the potential ice buildup could result in localized power outages, according to the Environment Canada warning.
