All student transportation services in Guelph and Wellington County have been suspended on Tuesday due to freezing rain. Wellington-Dufferin Student Transportation Services has cancelled transportation for students in all four service zones, including Guelph, Puslinch, Rockwood, Erin, North Wellington, and Dufferin County, while schools remain open.
Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region also announced the cancellation of buses to E.C. Drury. The freezing rain warning is in effect for Waterloo Region and Guelph, with Environment Canada forecasting the freezing rain to taper off in the early evening. Ice accumulation of one to five millimeters is expected by the end of the day.
According to Environment Canada, the precipitation may start as patchy freezing drizzle before transitioning into freezing rain, later changing to snow as a low-pressure system moves through southern Ontario. Slippery and icy road conditions are expected, with potential utility outages and hazards for pedestrians and drivers. Authorities are advising caution when walking or driving due to the risk of slips and falls.
Waterloo Regional Police are urging drivers to reduce speed and maintain a safe distance between vehicles to navigate the hazardous roads caused by freezing rain. Sgt. Ed Sanchuk of West Region Ontario Provincial Police also emphasized safe driving practices in a video, highlighting the need to adjust speed and driving behavior to match the weather conditions for a safe commute.
The Grand River Conservation Authority has warned against venturing onto ice-covered local streams, rivers, and lakes due to the unstable conditions arising from fluctuating temperatures.
