Construction has commenced at a previous horse racing venue where Cape Breton University is initiating a new housing development in Sydney, N.S. Heavy machinery started groundwork on Monday at the former Tartan Downs, a historic racetrack that operated from 1889 until its closure in 2006.
CBU announced that they are installing essential infrastructure like sewer, water, and storm-water systems, along with preparing the initial street layout for the first phase of the project, which will feature a 145-unit housing complex in a residential area. The Urban Neighborhood Development Association, established by CBU, is overseeing the project.
The housing project will include a mix of townhouses and apartments, with a significant portion designated as affordable housing. Expected to cater to student housing needs, the development will also be accessible to the general public.
Funding for the project includes $5 million from the provincial government and an additional $5.4 million in federal support through the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. While CBU has not set a specific timeline for construction, they anticipate announcing details on approvals and financing in the upcoming year.
Kent MacIntyre, President of the Association, stated in a press release that the early groundwork aims to maintain project momentum for a swift start once all phase one aspects are approved.
