In November, the 23-year-old reached the 53rd spot in the WTA singles rankings, and her coaches expressed optimism about her future in the sport.
Tjen showcased her progress by causing an upset in the first round of the Australian Open in Melbourne, defeating Canada’s Leylah Fernandez. Despite Fernandez being the 22nd seed in the tournament, Tjen emerged victorious with a scoreline of 6-2, 7-6 (1) in one hour and 43 minutes.
During the match, Tjen recorded four aces, 17 winners, six double faults, and 27 unforced errors, while Fernandez managed two aces, 16 winners, five double faults, and 28 unforced errors. In the women’s doubles opening round, Toronto’s Victoria Mboko, the sole Canadian woman to win her first-round singles match, partnered with American player Iva Jovic to defeat Ulrikke Eikeri and Ingrid Neel. The duo won the match with a score of 7-5, 6-3 in one hour and 31 minutes, showcasing excellent teamwork and a strong first-serve performance.
Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner swiftly advanced in his Australian Open campaign, as his opponent Hugo Gaston retired from their match due to an undisclosed injury. Sinner, aiming for a third consecutive title at the tournament, displayed his dominance on the court, winning the match with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
Additionally, Naomi Osaka made a stylish entrance onto the Rod Laver Arena, donning a unique outfit inspired by a jellyfish. She went on to defeat Antonia Ruzic in a closely contested match.
