In his home gym in Calgary, Kurt Oatway is engaging in weightlifting and pull-ups as part of his final training regimen leading up to the 2026 Paralympic Games in Italy. The 41-year-old elite sit-skier demonstrates unwavering determination to make a comeback to the global stage following a severe crash that sidelined him and prevented him from competing in the 2022 Beijing Games.
After sustaining multiple injuries, including broken bones, torn ligaments, and a punctured lung during a crash at the world championships in Lillehammer, Norway, just before the Paralympics, Oatway vowed not to let it be the end of his athletic journey. His resilience and persistence have been hallmarks of his career, which has been marked by overcoming challenges.
Growing up in Edmonton, Oatway initially learned skiing as an able-bodied athlete at the age of five. However, a spinal cord injury from a rock climbing accident in 2007 altered his path. Determined to return to skiing after being inspired by the Paralympics on TV, he embraced the adaptive program at Mission Ridge, a local hill in Saskatchewan.
Quickly progressing from tethered skiing to independent runs, Oatway impressed his coach with the rapid development of his skills. Recognizing his potential, the ski community at Mission Ridge proudly displays memorabilia showcasing Oatway’s achievements, reflecting their belief in his capabilities.
Supported by the Saskatchewan ski community, Oatway’s return to skiing symbolized a transformative journey from despair to triumph. With unwavering commitment and financial sacrifices from his family, Oatway pursued his skiing dreams, inspiring many along the way.
Oatway’s journey led him to international competitions with Team Canada, culminating in a surprising gold medal win in the sitting super giant slalom event at the 2018 Paralympic Games in PyeongChang. Now gearing up for the upcoming Paralympics in Milan and Cortina, Oatway remains grateful for his roots in Saskatchewan and is resolute in his quest to return to the podium.
The perseverance and gratitude he embodies serve as a testament to his remarkable journey, underscoring the importance of seizing opportunities and remaining grounded amidst success.
