“Norwalk Fire Chief Leads Swan Rescue from Frozen River”

In a heartwarming rescue mission, Norwalk deputy fire chief Jonathan Maggio and his team saved a swan trapped on the frozen Connecticut river. Initially feared dead, the swan surprised everyone by lifting its head when approached by the rescuers.

Last Thursday, Maggio received reports of a swan stuck in the icy waters of the Norwalk River. Despite his experience in various rescues, this was the first time he had to save a swan. The male swan was found under a bridge, seemingly seeking shelter from the harsh winter conditions.

A joint effort involving 23 firefighters and wildlife rescue personnel was required to free the swan. Using ropes, ladders, and cold water suits, they carefully approached the nervous bird, showing it compassion and support throughout the rescue operation.

Following the successful rescue, the swan, now named Clancey, was taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment. Clancey, initially cold-stunned and dehydrated, showed signs of improvement after receiving care. The staff at the hospital expect Clancey to fully recover and are monitoring his progress closely.

Maggio, reflecting on his three decades of rescue work, expressed pride and satisfaction in the team’s efforts. The successful rescue of Clancey has left a lasting impact on Maggio and his colleagues, marking it as a memorable and rewarding experience in their careers.
