In northern Ontario, local leaders are focusing on supporting industries and improving highways as both provincial and federal governments show interest in mining opportunities. The Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA) represents the region at these levels and collaborates with the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities. Following uncertainty due to the Canada-U.S. trade war, NOMA is pleased with recent policies, such as expediting development in the Ring of Fire mineral deposit.
The new “One Project, One Process, One Decision” model, introduced by the Ontario and federal governments, aims to streamline assessment processes. Stéphane Perrault from the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada highlighted the agreement’s efficiency and flexibility in project assessments.
Rick Dumas, president of NOMA, emphasized the importance of showcasing northern Ontario’s significance in development dialogues. He stressed the essential roles of the mining and forestry sectors in the region’s economy and job creation.
While some critics raise concerns about fast-tracking development, Dumas underscored the potential for job creation and economic growth in smaller communities. He emphasized the need for reinvesting resource sector revenues back into local communities.
Amid challenges faced by the forestry sector, including shutdowns at various facilities, Dumas highlighted the sector’s impact on everyday life. Minister of Energy and Mines, Stephen Lecce, emphasized the government’s commitment to unlocking northern Ontario’s economic potential and creating job opportunities.
Regarding highway safety, Dumas acknowledged improvements but stressed the urgent need for further enhancements along the Highway 11-17 corridor. Recent tragic incidents underscore the necessity for immediate action to enhance highway safety and prevent future accidents. The province’s completion of widening projects on the Trans-Canada Highway was noted as a step towards improving road safety and stimulating economic growth.
Dumas advocated for twin highway projects and the implementation of a two-plus-one system to enhance safety and boost economic opportunities in the region. These issues are expected to be discussed at the upcoming Rural Ontario Municipal Association conference in Toronto.
