The persistent puddle known as Lake Timmicaca, once a familiar sight in a downtown Tim Hortons parking lot, has vanished, according to observations by CBC Hamilton. The city has confirmed that in 2026, the puddle will be gone permanently as the property owner, a corporation linked to Tim Hortons, has been granted a work permit to repair the storm sewer system underneath the parking lot to ensure proper drainage. The owner has already undertaken an engineer’s review and engaged contractors for the upcoming work, scheduled for early spring 2026 due to weather considerations, as mentioned by Dan Smith, the acting director of licensing and bylaw, in an email. City officials mentioned that there have been no recent complaints regarding the puddle, but they will continue monitoring the site until the standing water issues are fully resolved.
Tim Hortons did not provide any comments regarding the water accumulation issue, locally referred to as Lake Timmicaca, or the necessary repairs. The lake-like puddle has been a notable feature over the years, with approximately a foot of water covering a significant portion of the parking lot on John Street S. during various weather conditions. Residents have been captivated by the puddle, creating art, taking photographs, and engaging in discussions on platforms like Reddit. In a previous incident last March, a truck was seen draining the storm sewer beneath the puddle.
Local resident Max Rose Begg Goodis, a dedicated Lake Timmicaca enthusiast, expressed understanding about the disappearance of the puddle as downtown Hamilton undergoes urban revitalization. Despite the changes, Goodis emphasized that Lake Timmicaca will always hold a special place in the community’s collective memory. Quoting lyrics from Semisonic’s popular song “Closing Time,” Goodis reflected on the concept that every ending gives rise to a new beginning.
