“Balancing Rock Trail Revamp Underway: Funds Secured for Improvements”

The Digby municipality is initiating a project to revamp the steep and densely wooded pathway leading to the Balancing Rock to enhance its accessibility. Local MP Chris d’Entremont recently disclosed over $37,000 in funding from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) to support the initial phase of the renovation, with an additional $25,000 contribution from the province and municipality.

The allocated funds will be utilized to enlist engineering specialists for the redesign of the Balancing Rock Trail and viewing platform in Tiverton, as per the ACOA release. Christopher Kingston, the municipality’s director of municipal services and development officer, highlighted the proactive approach to address potential replacements on the 30-year-old trail.

The municipality is in the process of selecting a consultant to evaluate and determine the sections of the trail requiring refurbishment or replacement. Further financial support will be necessary to cover the construction expenses.

The trail, located in Tiverton, Digby County, spans 2.5 kilometers round trip and culminates in a platform offering a panoramic view of a towering rock column delicately perched on a cliff overlooking the Bay of Fundy. Accessing the site involves a challenging descent down a series of narrow wooden staircases.

Kingston emphasized the goal of maximizing trail accessibility for all visitors and projected that any modifications would not occur until at least 2027.
