Thaioronióhte Dan David, a well-known Kanien’kehá:ka journalist who played a key role in establishing the news division of the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, has passed away. He succumbed to cancer on January 12 at the age of 73, as confirmed by his sister Marie David.
Described as the “father of APTN News” by Karyn Pugliese, a host and producer at APTN who considered David a mentor and colleague, his legacy includes mentoring numerous Indigenous journalists and launching their careers. David co-founded APTN News in 2000, formerly known as InVision News, with the aim of revolutionizing the narrative surrounding Indigenous stories. The decision to create APTN News stemmed from David’s firsthand experience of mainstream media misrepresenting his community of Kanehsatà:ke during the Oka Crisis in 1990.
During the 78-day standoff of the Oka Crisis between Kanien’kehá:ka protesters, Quebec police, the RCMP, and the army over disputed lands in Kanehsatà:ke, David, who was reporting for CBC at the time, was prevented from covering the conflict due to perceived bias. This experience fueled his passion for authentic journalism that challenges stereotypes and advocates for marginalized voices.
Following his impactful career at CBC, David was instrumental in launching the South African Broadcasting Corporation post-apartheid, an experience that greatly influenced his approach to establishing APTN’s news department. Pugliese highlighted David’s dedication to training journalists with expertise and humor, emphasizing his belief that journalism should serve the people.
In addition to his leadership at APTN, David held positions at Toronto Metropolitan University and the University of Toronto, contributing to diversity initiatives and education. Remembered as a humble and empathetic leader, David’s influence extended far beyond his professional achievements, leaving a lasting impact on those he mentored and worked with.
Marie David shared that her brother’s commitment to fundraising for cancer research in his final years resonated with many, reflecting his selfless nature and dedication to making a positive impact. The outpouring of tributes following his passing underscores the profound influence Dan David had on the field of Indigenous journalism and the lives of those he touched.
