Death In Paradise’s Selwyn Patterson leaves Saint Marie after sad admission in shock exit

Commissioner Selwyn Patterson has seemingly bid a fond farewell to Death In Paradise. In the final episode of the series, Selwyn – played by Don Warrington – was offered his job back after things went horribly wrong with his replacement.

In tonight’s episode, Selwyn was offered a chance to return to his role – but he made a big decision. After solving the latest case, the team headed to Catherine’s Bar when Selwyn showed up in a taxi.

“There you are, sit down, I’ll bring you a rum,” Catherine said, before noting that the Commissioner had arrived in a taxi and not his car. He told her: “I won’t be staying,” as she questioned what he was going to do about the job offer.

“I don’t know but it felt wrong to say yes, too much has happened, and right now, I can’t see a way of getting things back to how they were,” he explained – confirming he would not be taking back his role and would be heading away for a while.

“So you will go and see Andrina – and after that?” Catherine asked, as Selwyn replied: “Who knows? Promise me, you will look after yourself and them.” She then said to him: “Promise me, this isn’t farewell but au revoir.”

“Au revoir then my friend,” he told her before kissing her on the cheek and getting back into the taxi as he bid a fond farewell to the island. Don Warrington has been on the show ever since its inception well over a decade ago.

Throughout his time, Don has worked with all five detectives including DI Richard Poole (Ben Miller), DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall), DI Jack Mooney (Ardal O’Hanlon), DI Neville Parker (Ralf Little) and most recently, DI Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet).

Just last series, the show marked an incredible 100 episodes. Speaking about his favourite moments from the series, he said last year: “I remember moments with all of the inspectors we’ve had. I remember moments with Ben, I particularly liked it when I shouted at him… And I liked the moments with Kris where there was a kind of tolerance of him.

“I remember Ardal because they formed a sort of philosophical relationship which I thought was gentle and thought-provoking, involving two people who were happy to reveal bits of themselves to each other when they were away from work and that was nice.

“Neville, I remember moments because he’s, on one level, such an irritant to Selwyn, but he also finds him incredible. How can anybody malfunction as much as Neville does? For all his brilliance, you just think ‘What?!’ So yes, they’ve all got their place.”

Discussing the Commissioner’s love for his job, Don added: “He loves his job. I think when you love what you do, you tend to be quite good at it. Although he can be quite tough with people, he also cares about them.

“He cares about each member of his team, even Neville, who irritates him! But nevertheless, there are moments of tenderness between him and Neville because if you strip away all Neville’s issues, Selwyn is very concerned about people’s humanity. It’s an interesting combination in terms of being a policeman because if we look at the reality of it, you see some horrible things and it’s how you attain a degree of humanity and I think he does, and that’s what makes him sustainable.”
