“3D-Printed Stand Saves Kitten with Rare Medical Condition”

A couple in Kamloops, British Columbia, utilized 3D printing technology to create a feeding stand for a foster kitten with a unique medical condition. The five-month-old kitten named Piglet, under the care of Angela and Jason Lyall, struggled to eat properly since being taken in at just two days old. Despite being part of a litter with her mother from local rescue Sammy’s Forgotten Felines, Piglet faced challenges in gaining weight and developed pneumonia over time. Veterinary tests later revealed that she likely had megaesophagus, a condition affecting the normal function of the food passage to the stomach.

Concerned about Piglet’s well-being, the couple designed a custom vertical feeding stand using a free template found online and 3D printed it. The stand aimed to prevent food regurgitation and potential inhalation risks. The innovative solution proved successful, allowing Piglet to receive proper nourishment, leading to improved health and development. A video showcasing Piglet’s feeding stand went viral on social media, drawing attention to her story and raising awareness about the rare megaesophagus condition in cats.

Angela highlighted the importance of consistent care for Piglet, emphasizing the need for five daily feedings and post-meal upright positioning to aid digestion. The couple expressed their commitment to adapting the feeding stand as Piglet grows. Despite facing uncertainties about Piglet’s survival, Angela expressed gratitude for witnessing her remarkable progress and the collective effort of their family in supporting the kitten’s recovery.
